Kobe has been larger than life in China ever since the 2008 Beijing Olympics when the Black Mamba was a focal point of the Redeem Team’s Gold Medal. That’s why it isn’t too surprising when we see China-centric colorways throughout the Kobe line, like with this new Nike Zoom Kobe Icon “China”. The Chinese New Year is on February 8th, so we still have plenty of time to see multiple hoops brands showcase their festive holiday gear. Here the unique Kobe model (that’s somewhere between lifestyle and performance thanks to a shroud zip-up upper and a Kobe 6 outsole) utilizes the tried and true University Red/Metallic Gold combination in honor of China’s New Year celebration. A mesh upper alternates between red and black speckles while a bright red outsole compliments nicely. Gold foil lands on the branding throughout while the former hieroglyphics graphics on the tongue are missing this time around. The Kobe Icon debuts this January 15th but stay tuned for the official release update on the “China” colorway in the near future. More photos below.
