The Nike Air Max 1 Goes Full Safari

The Nike Air Max 1 Goes Full Safari

1987 was a big year for legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield. He had just created the Air Max 1—the first-ever sneaker with visible air—but he wasn’t done just yet. After finishing the Air Max 1, Hatfield went right back to work and created the Air Safari. A lightweight runner that was the first-ever shoe to feature the now-quintessential safari print—a pattern inspired by a couch in a luxury sofa store that the designer found himself in—Hatfield’s second legendary creation of the year helped push footwear colorways and prints in a bold new direction.

Fast-forwards to 2018. After releasing a “Safari” Air Max 95 last week, London-based size? is nodding to both of Hatfield’s 1987 creations with a “Safari” take on the Air Max 1, featuring the silhouette of one classic sneaker and the colorway of the other. The shoe features a layered upper with a black safari print on the mudugard and swoosh, while a grey safari print appears on the heel, midfoot, and around the lacing system. Contrast is provided by a vibrant orange mesh on the toebox and heel collar, and the shoe’s look is rounded off with a white midsole and orange/black outsole. Look for these commemorative Air Max 1s to release exclusively on the size? previews app and at all size? stores June 15th, and retail for £120, or around $160 USD.
