Teaming up with labels worldwide almost nonstop, New Balance continues to expand their rolodex of contacts as collaborations drop en-masse from month-to-month. Forgoing their restrictive traditional approach with each new issue, the Boston institution has effectively subverted expectations thanks to notable creations by JJJJound, No Vacancy Inn, and its latest from London-based label Aries. Fresh off their own partnership with Suicoke’s technical sandals, the imprint has now set its sights on the oft-untouched 991 silhouette, giving it two distinct makeovers inspired by the blending of sportswear and fashion in recent years. The first kit, which is a notch above its accompaniment in color, bears bright neon greens across its entire front half; reflective silvers overlay atop the toe box as well as at the heel, shrouding over the aforementioned hue as well as mesh of lighter greys. In Departure, the next leans more on neutral legs with the colorless shade seeing major use throughout. Bits of orange as well as a saturated yellow accent at the lining and midsole, respectively, finishing off the pair with branded hits of “ARIES” and “ARISE” at both sides of the rear as well as along the insole.
