Nike Repurposes Offcuts To Craft The Retro Stylized Atsuma Runner

In an effort to reduce their ecological imprint, Nike has landed on the visually alluring and productively ingenious Atsuma silhouette, a new but retro stylized runner that aims to rethink the creation of cut-and-sew footwear in general — a goal secondary to the central challenge: decreasing material waste from the source. Its namesake, which borrows from a small town in Hokkaido while separating in Kanji to mean a wealth of tranquil and fitting terminology once translated, embellishes the upper proudly, lying adjacent to the overlaid swoosh in elegant cursive text. Its neon orange backdrop is just one small piece to the entire kit, one that makes full use of pattern offcuts and turns them into integral components of the construction. Paneling from the heel wrap to the eye stay and then around to the forefoot arrangements affix in light tans or bright neons and even seldom uses of an ocean-esque blue, making use of negative space as it opens up to black mesh all throughout. Elsewhere, laces blend in near perfectly to the more neutral elements of the palette, leading up to tri-marked logos on the tongue and a hang tab built from a piece of the outsole. Then, to further their sustainable motives, recycled sockliners arrive housed just within. Grab a detailed look at the Atsuma right here and find it releasing at Nike.com on January 1st.
