The Nike Space Hippie Collection Releases Tomorrow

Initially scheduled to launch on June 11th, the Nike Space Hippie line debuts stateside tomorrow, July 3rd. Comprised of four silhouettes, the collection is Nike’s next big, bold sustainability bet.

Each model – from Space Hippie 01 to Space Hippie 04 – is constructed from “space junk”. While The Swoosh may secretly be working on transforming actual debris from space into material for footwear, it utilized recycled plastic bottles, t-shirts, and textile scraps for the line’s “Space Waste Yarn” uppers. Nike’s consideration for its environmental impact enabled the Space Hippie 02 to achieve an upper that’s 90% recycled content by weight. Cushioning underfoot is also rooted in the goal of, as John Hoke, Nike Chief Design Officer, says, “turning trash into something beautiful”: It upcycles ZoomX foam from the VaporFly 4% line, as well as a blend of standard Nike foams and Grind Rubber that make up “Crater Foam”.

FlyEase and FastFit systems on the Space Hippie 03 are leftovers from other footwear production lines (ostensibly making the tall silhouette the rarest of the bunch). The women’s Space Hippie 04 also features “Space Waste Yarn” and “Crater Foam”, but differentiates itself from the collection by debuting in two colorways instead of one.
