Nike Infuses Air Max 96 II DNA Into The Vapormax EVO

Nike’s efforts around the Vapormax cushioning have relied heavily on reworking classic models from the archives, spawning impressive creations such as the Vapormax Plus and 360, and rather questionable ones like the Vapormax Gliese. Joining the line-up in late 2020 or early 2021 is the Vapormax EVO which tacks on the design DNA of the Air Max 96 II, sitting above an armored midsole with a shallower Vapormax unit. Nike Sportswear footwear designers envision this model to appeal to the “downtown” crowd, suitable to sit on shelves next to other durable trail-appropriate offerings that are still on trend today.

Despite the obvious references to the 1996 running shoe, the Vapormax Evo has plenty of modifications to distance itself from that origin. A new neoprene tongue features rubber plating with a new Vapormax logo spelled out in eclectic type, an “EVO” call-out on the heel, and a straight mudguard above the midsole reminiscent of the Air Max 90. The overall dimensions of the Vapormax are also similar to the contemporary shape seen in the Vapormax 2020 Flyknit.

For now, a release date is not yet known, but you can expect a slew of colorways – including this triple-black edition – in late 2020 or early 2021.

Updated March 1st, 2021: A release date has been scheduled for March 26th, 2021.
