If not for the rise of collaborations, we would never have been able to witness Gucci working with adidas nor Ben & Jerry’s with Nike SB. Eames Office, too, would likely never have touched a pair of sneakers, so we owe a great deal of thanks to Reebok for bringing the beloved name into their collaborative family.
Today, the Eameses are being celebrated by the Club C yet again, though this time in the “Dot Pattern” and “Composition” colorway. The latter, for starters, is based on the same-named painting created by the legendary Ray Eames in 1939. Abstraction is rife throughout — a style Ray honed under Hans Hoffman — with beautifully colored, indeterminate shapes dressing the entire upper. The artist and designer’s signature, then, marks the side, rounding out a heartfelt ode to her and her wonderful work.
The accompanying “Dot Pattern” make-up borrows inspiration from a textile print that was considered but not summitted to the MoMA’s 1947 Competition for Printed Fabrics. While seemingly random in their placement, the black dots pay careful attention to proportion, with each spaced in a way evidently meticulous. These are cast atop a natural-hued base and equally subtle raw rubber sole.
